The Whole Smiths – Get Real
About three years ago I set out to find the best way to feed my family. The more I read, the more confused I got. Should we be following a vegan/plant-based diet? Do I need to stop cooking my food and go raw? Should we limit our red meat, or add more meat into our diet? Gahhh!
Quite honestly, it was enough to give anyone a headache. But through it all, one general theme stood out in my mind; eating minimally processed foods that our bodies know how to process. As a self-proclaimed logical person, this is what made the most sense to me. And because of that, the general framework of the paleo diet is what struck a chord with me.
Many of my recipes fall into the category that people know as “paleo”. They typically don’t contain dairy, grains, gluten, legumes or refined sugar. With that being said, my family and I are still human. I’ll add some goat cheese to my salads or have fro-yo after soccer with the kids. And who doesn’t love a good ‘ol fashioned taco sometimes? But that’s not every day, and I’m not drowning in bowls of yogurt and ice cream on a daily basis. I don’t think grains, gluten or a bit of sugar here and there are the culprits. But I DO think the amounts of these and other highly processed foods that we consume are a concern, and I think it’s time we start addressing the issue. I feel passionately that eating healthy or “clean” doesn’t need to be boring or pretentious. It can be fun and amazingly delicious!
When creating this book, it was important to me that it be a book that people would actually cook from. I wanted to create recipes that become family favorites; recipes you make so many times that eventually you don’t even need the recipe. My goal is to get people and families back in the kitchen cooking and eating REAL food; understanding what types of food fuel their bodies and what types of food make them feel not-so-great.
Long gone are the low-fat, low flavor, high-carb days of the 80’s. In fact, I often joke that nutrition today is simply about undoing all of what the 80’s programmed into us. Non-Fat, Sugar-Free Boston Creme Pie yogurt anybody? And with that, it’s time to Eat Real people!
