Honey Grapefruit Margarita

Spending my whole life in California, I’ve developed quite the addiction to Mexican food. It truly is my favorite cuisine. Burritos, quesadillas, chips, guac, margaritas, etc. etc., I love it all. I have spent the better part of my adult life having some form of Mexican food every week. Unfortunately though, the cheese, the beans, tortillas, and oils aren’t exactly considered “wholesome” or healthy for you. And my body hates me dearly after. Giving up most of what I’ve come to know as Mexican food has got to be one of the hardest parts about cleaning up our diet. Especially the chips and salsa. It’s my kryptonite and I can’t resist them if they’re there.

So it’s no surprise that Cinco de Mayo is usually one of this gringa’s favorite holidays! Sadly though, this year I won’t be heading to Tlaquepaque to indulge in their famous Super Chevela and to-die-for chips and salsa. In fact, I think we’re going to have roasted chicken. Womp, womp! And since I’ve just begun this blog, I haven’t had a chance to recreate a wholesome version one of my favorite dishes to share with you. I DID however have a quick minute this afternoon to whip up a fresh, unprocessed and refined-sugar free margarita for you! You didn’t think I would leave you hanging now, did you?

Yes, alcoholic beverages aren’t paleo, primal or anything. I know. But we eat right 90% of the time so we can have one and feel ok about it. It’s about cleaning up what you can. And that’s what I did with this. It consists of freshly squeezed juice, homemade honey syrup, and some tequila. And it tastes so much better than any pre-made mix you will buy at the store. I’m looking at YOU Jose Cuervo!
