Sweet Potato + Chocolate Chili

Sweet Potato + Chocolate Chili from The Whole Smiths. Not only is this chili delicious and loaded with hearty flavor, it’s also paleo and gluten-free and can be easily modified to be Whole30 compliant. It’s a must-make for large gatherings and cool evenings.

Sweet Potato + Chocolate Chili from the Whole Smiths. Paleo friendly, gluten-free and Whole30 compliant. A MUST Pin, will make again and again!

Yeah, you read that title right. Sweet Potato and CHOCOLATE Chili. Chocolate. In chili. At this point you’re either sc’rrrrd or out of your mind excited and totally get it. If you’re in the former group, don’t be sc’rrrd, the chocolate just gives a punch of flavor and doesn’t overwhelm the dish.

Before I get too far into this post, I gotta say this… A. This shizz is the bomb. B. Please feel free to tinker and make this chili your own. It’s a great starting point, but I’m a firm believer that chili has GOT to have your personal touch. Isn’t that what chili is all about?  There’s something about chili that screams “make it your own”. You love it spicy? Add some more spice. You loooove some bacon even more? Then add some more bacon! With that being said, follow the recipe the first time, then see what you want to tweak. Got it? Good. Let’s go!

Sweet Potato + Chocolate Chili from The Whole Smiths. Paleo, gluten-free and easy to make Whole30 compliant.

So prior to becoming paleo, I had what I thought was the best chili recipe. It had tons of beans, some ground turkey and the secret ingredient… a packet of hot cocoa mix! Gross, but it was pretty amazing.

Once we made the leap to paleo I knew I needed to make some changes to make it compliant but I wanted to maintain the flavor I had worked so hard to perfect. After some blood, sweat and sweet potatoes, this baby was born. I even made it for the girls’ cowgirl birthday party this year and people looooved it. There was none left by the time the party was done… and I had a made a huge batch.

The first step was getting rid of the beans. Quite honestly, that took away so much of the “bulk” of the recipe and I needed to add that back in. And did you know, “real” chili isn’t even supposed to have beans anyways? For that, I swapped in some roasted sweet potatoes. If you need a great tutorial on how to best roast your sweet potatoes, head over to my Sweet Potato “Chips” + Dip recipe.

I also needed to get rid of the liquid smoke and Worcestershire. In went some coconut aminos and smoked paprika. Again, it turned out to be a great swap. Of course,I had to nix the hot cocoa mix and in went some Enjoy Life mini chocolate chips in it’s place. In case you are unfamiliar with them, they’re dairy-free, nut-free, and soy free. As far as chocolate chips go they’re as clean as it gets. In order to keep it super clean or Whole30 compliant, feel free to just use two tablespoons of straight cocoa powder instead.

Speaking of Whole30, there are just two small tweaks you need to make to this. Swap the chocolate chips for straight up cocoa powder and omit the gluten-free beer. Cool? The directions are located below in the recipe card. Back to the chili…

This chili is THICK! Remember back in the day that commercial that said it wasn’t real chili unless you could stand a fork in it? Well this is that. This is the stuff cowboys live for apparently. Apparently those cowboys ate their chili from a can, but I digress. If you like yours a little less thick, feel free to add more tomato sauce or thin it out with a bit more beer or chicken stock. Like I said above, make it then modify it to what you like. Or if you think it’s as out of the world as I think it is, you’ll just leave it. My point is… don’t be afraid to tinker. That’s how great chefs (and chilis) are born!

I love this recipe! Always a hit in my house. Do you think you could make this in a pressure cooker?? How long would you cook?

I came here to copy the link to send to a friend doing her first Whole 30 and realized there aren’t nearly enough reviews on this PHENOMENAL recipe. So, this is the only chili I make. EVER. Everyone I have ever made it for (Paleo and non-Paleo eaters alike) has raved over it. I’ve made it a bazillion (okay, like 20) times and it had been perfect every. single. time. SO GOOD.

I know... Sweet potatoes and chocolate in a CHILI? I know... Sweet potatoes and chocolate in a CHILI?! It sounds wild. But it works! And it’s amazing. And you know what else? One of y’all entered it into a chili cook off and IT WON! Sooo, maybe you should make it? It *is*chili weather after all... Seriously though! Let’s have a stinky convo, h Seriously though! Let’s have a stinky convo, huh? As soon as I started cleaning up my food perspective, cleaner personal care products came into my world as well. I didn’t even really think twice about it before but those worlds tend to collide. So here I am today not only mindful of what I put INTO my body (food) but the stuff I’m putting ONTO my body (products). Deodorant was the first thing I swapped as the ingredients and effects of traditional anti-perspirants were most alarming to me. But I was suuuuuuuper hesitant. I was not a person who rarely sweated. I was! In workouts or just through the day. I even carries a travel anti-perspirant in my purse during the day. And yeah, that end of day weird smell of anti-perspirant “powder fresh” scent mixed with whatever was goin on in my body was... not good. You KNOW what I’m talking about! So I was reeeeeeally hesitant about switching to cleaner products. But it really was the best thing ever. It took a some time, I’m not going to lie. It took time to fond the right ones that didn’t irritant my skin and ones that... actually worked! Today I use Beautycounter’s newly released refillable deodorants as well as Stank Stop from @fatco. I use both and honestly it pretty much comes down to which scent I’m favoring that day, that dictates my choice. They both work fab for me and don’t leave stains on my clothing, smell nice and don’t irritate my skin. And here’s what else, I do not sweat NEARLY as much as I used to. I was worried I would be a sweaty pig to put it lightly. But after time, my body adjusted and it’s really not even a problem. And no smell. It works! And here’s the thing... WE ARE SUPPOSED TO SWEAT PEOPLE! So when we wear anti-perspirant I can imagine that throws off our natural balance. So if you’ve been hesitant, give it a try! I linked to the Beautycounter deo in my bio and you can visit @fatco to try theirs out. Ask any questions in the comments and I’ll get to them for you. God bless the day I am talk about my body odor (or now lack thereof!) in a public forum. 🙄🥴 https://www.beautycounter.com/michellesmith3?goto=/clean-deo
Unh, ahh Sweet Potato ...Hash. An oldie but good Unh, ahh Sweet Potato ...Hash. An oldie but goodie. One of my first recipes to “go viral” was this Sweet Potato Hash. With good reason, it’s so freaking good! I made it multiple times a week in the early days of this website and it’s kinda trailed off for no good reason. Time to bring it back. I’m whipping up a batch tomorrow to use through the week, it reheats perfectly. Just make the hash ahead of time and fry an egg to throw on top day of. Recipe at the link in my profile. Double the bath and you’re be good to go on breakfasts for the week. https://www.thewholesmiths.com/bacon-sweet-potato-hash/
