Bulletproof-Style Coffee

I don’t know wether I am blessed or cursed that caffeine makes me crazy. I’ve always been a decaf girl for the most part because caffeine makes my heart race and makes me a worrying, anxious lunatic. And if I have it past noon, I’m sure to be awake straight through noon the next day. I’ve always had problems metabolizing caffeine, even before I started eating clean. If you’re interested, here’s an incredibly interesting and nerdy article on how your body metabolizes caffeine. Click —> HERE.

However, when I started following a Paleo diet I quickly began hearing about the benefits of bulletproof coffee. Essentially it’s coffee with butter and MCT oil mixed in that’s supposed to give you balanced energy for days. Ok, well not DAYS… but a long time. From what I understood, the fat from the butter helped your body to metabolize the caffeine differently. In turn, you didn’t feel the caffeine high and crash but more of an even sustained energy level. I’m always down to try anything new. And truth be told, I HAVE found that my body reacts differently when I have my coffee like this. I don’t get jittery, I don’t feel that I’m on-edge, but I DO feel more energy, which I love. With that being said, I still can’t drink a million cups of it without feeling some side effects.

After tinkering around with it, I created a ratio that I like that works well for me. The only problem is it tastes so good I really have to limit myself because before I know it, I’m two cups in and WILL be up for days. I also found that I like using coconut oil better than butter, simply because it gives me a taste that I like better. As well, I skip the MCT oil as after doing a bit more research it seems the coconut oil works in the same way. I also opt for a bit of maple syrup and cinnamon.

I decided to finally add this to the blog because every time I posted it to Instagram with my morning breakfast someone asks about it. I find it’s so much easier to just direct them to the blog. Feel free to tinker with the recipe once you make it. If you prefer it more sweet.. add a bit more maple syrup. Not so cinnamon-y? Add less. You get the picture.

And note, this isn’t Whole30 complaint because it obviously has added maple syrup.. so leave it out and give it a try!

Bulletproof Style Coffee from the Whole Smiths using coconut oil! So delicious and a great way to start the day. Dairy-free, paleo friendly and sweetened with just a bit of maple syrup.

  1. I have wanted to try bulletproof coffee for a while and this morning I finally did it! It is amazing. Crazy, crazy good. I’m interested to see how I do throughout the day after this. Thank you!!

  2. You should try also adding 1-2 Tbsp of grass fed gelatin (hydrolyzed collagen), apparently women do better with bp coffee if they drink it with extra protein. Plus it’s an easy way to squeeze more gelatin into your diet!

  3. This looks good! If you add a tablespoon of grass-fed gelatin, you will get a lot more froth and a protein boost too!

  4. Right here is the right blog for anyone who really wants to find out about this topic.
You realize a whole lot its almost tough to argue with you (not that I personally
will need to…HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a subject that has been written about for years.
    Wonderful stuff, just wonderful!
